Final Thoughts, Post-Election

Contemporary Christianity Class at Fairlawn Mennonite Church, Sept. 11 to Nov. 13, 2016

The Scenario
The purpose of the Contemporary Christianity class was to stimulate us to more zealously pursue intimacy with Christ as we became realistic about the darkness of our nation and the ineffectiveness of American Christians in influencing it for good.
The Nov. 8 election of Donald J. Trump as President Elect of the United States was shocking to many. There are various and contradictory opinions as to what this means for America but nobody really knows. It is vitally important that God’s people are in tune with Him in a way that enables us to be part of what He is doing regardless of what it means for America or for us.
On the Side of Light
God’s plan is the central factor in all this, and wouldn’t the “upset” nature of this election be characteristic of how He works?! He will do it in His way and in His time. He has given Satan a lot of rope but He is ultimately concerned about making His Name known, and He will. He is GOD!!
We will only see and be part of what He is doing if we view things from His perspective, and that requires a close relationship with Him. (Jesus is Calling) Otherwise we will only see things from an earthly perspective, which can take us in various directions based on how we align with Trump.
Basically, we need to discern if Donald Trump is a “Cyrus” of sorts whom God has appointed for this time, or if he is simply another pawn on Satan’s chessboard. Consider Isaiah 44:28, "It is I who says of Cyrus, 'He is My shepherd! And he will perform all My desire.' And he declares of Jerusalem, 'She will be built,' And of the temple, 'Your foundation will be laid.'" (nasb)
Oh wow!! Think of that in the context of the God of Isaiah 44 and 45 and in light of the present secular initiatives regarding Jerusalem and the temple mount. God will have His way and He uses the unrighteous toward His end. He does act for the same of His Name, as in Ezekiel 36:22-23, 38:23,   Isaiah 48:9-11 and so many more references! Maybe He isn’t done with America yet!
The Dark Side
Without God’s direct intervention - - -
The erosion of America’s moral and spiritual foundations will continue until the guilt of her rebellion is purged by the deep repentance of American Christians who have failed to be her Mt. 5:13-15 preserving salt and guiding light.
Our hunger for “peace” makes us vulnerable to deception by Mt. 24:4-5 false “messiahs”.
The character and resultant words and actions of persons in both parties before the election, will prevail in the future regardless of Trump’s, Ryan’s, Clinton’s and Obama’s promises to work together. That, is who they are.
The political teamwork and the funds needed to fulfill Trump’s promises re immigration, infrastructure, health care and more are unrealistic and many will be disillusioned with him.
The commitment of some now in office to establish their legacy, and their and others’ zeal to advance certain moral, spiritual, economic, social and environmental agenda, will not allow them to relinquish their influence even if they don’t hold office. No action to preserve their influence is “below” them and the loss of thousands of American lives would be to them a small price to pay to get their way.
The present civil unrest re the election is not to be taken lightly.
DJT does not have the moral vision and fortitude himself, or political support from others, to hold the course toward the agenda that Evangelicals elected him to advance.
Satan is actively at work with his deceptions including earthly affections, false prophets, and the pursuit of signs and wonders.
In terms of what is godly, good for America and possible, conservatives can be deceived by Trump’s declared agenda as much as liberals were by Obama’s.
We will only recognize lies if we know the truth, but if we are satisfied with the message of the lies we won’t seek truth.
The Operative Words
“Deception” and “discernment” are the operative words for our day. The recent American scene introduced deception at a whole new level. A key for God's people in the ongoing "new America" will be the triumph of discernment over deception.
The tricky thing is that deception comes easily. One only needs to glide along, believing what "they" say and doing what "they" do. That's not very complicated but of course Satan is cheering them on.
Discernment, on the other hand, takes effort. We have to use our heads. We need to pray, search the scriptures, dig into things and weigh them out, listen to each other - - and make choices. There's a price to be paid, and in the process we're likely to displease some others.
The Bottom Line
It is imperative that God’s people find our identity in Him and separate ourselves from the affections of the world including the American Dream. (Two Kingdoms)
We face a multitude of influences, affections, opinions and loyalties, and none of us really knows what is coming. We must join Jehosophat in saying, "For we are powerless before this great multitude who are coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are on You." (II Chron. 20:12 nasb.) And we must do that together.
The time between now and Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, 2017 is critical to our future. We can move toward a smooth transition in government, or a lot of bad things could happen. God knows, and we are His - - and He holds us in His hands! See "Words of Comfort, Instruction and Encouragement")
