Q9 will be discussed in class at Fairlawn Mennonite Church on Oct. 16, 2016

What reason would we have to believe that God will continue to protect America from the consequences of our having abandoned our spiritual and moral foundations? Or haven’t we?

Well, if my belief that God specifically led in the establishment of America as a nation of resources and opportunity through whom He would make His Name known to the ends of the earth is true, then it’s reasonable to think that He would “cover” us to a certain point in order to accomplish His purposes. And of course He said that He will bless those who bless Israel (Gen. 12:3), which America has historically done.

However, He also warned in Deut. 30:11-19 and numerous other places, that we have a choice and will suffer severe consequences if we turn from Him. And it is true that although America was the primary transporter of the Good News to others, things have changed and we are no longer nearly as essential to the spread of the Gospel. Asian, South American and other countries are now responsible for much of the missionary activity around the world. Further, Wycliffe Associates’ MAST technology/strategy is now in the hands of nationals in many countries and hundreds of languages. It has gone viral, as we say, and Bible translation in the remaining languages would continue even if America were shut down.

Sadly, we have taken our open rebellion against God to a new level, as symbolized in the June 26, 2015 Supreme Court decision in which they called evil good and good evil (Isa. 5:20) by affirming “gay marriage.” And our support of Israel is increasingly in question. Don’t forget - - there are two sides to the Gen. 12:3 coin. Read it again!

So - - does this raise any doubts about America’s ongoing “blessed nation” status?
