J-5 Cub Cruiser Info and Trivia

All J-5's are covered by FAA Aircraft Specification A-725

There are about 470 of the J-5 series on the current U.S. Civil Aircraft Register, including three AE-1s.

The J-5A, L-4F, was built with the 75-hp Continental A-75-8 (A boosted A-65). The L-4Fs were J-5A's "impressed" by the USAAF. Baugher lists them here. (Wait - - slow!)

The J-5A-80 had the 80-hp Continental A-80-8, which never became popular

The J-5B, L-4G, was built with the 75-hp GO-145-C2. This is a geared engine. L-4G's were J-5B's "impressed" by the USAAF. Baugher lists them here.

The J-5C, Navy HE-1 and AE-1 were built with the 100-hp Lycoming O-235. Construction Numbers were 5-1309, and 5-1388 and up. The J5C is the same as the J5A except for redesigned landing gear and engine installation.

100 J-5C ambulance aircraft were produced for the U.S. Navy, beginning with CN 1400, and given Navy BuNo 30197 to 30296. They were initially called the HE-1, but when the helicopters came into service they were redesignated the AE-1. They are the same as the J5C except for the removal of rear seat and baggage compartment, the addition of several fuselage members to support the litter, and minor rudder and aileron control system changes. Baugher covers them here.
